Plaid Notebook
Above you can see how I went about covering the notebook. First, I cut my patterned paper to size and "dry" fitted it around the notebook, lightly creasing it so that I would have a good idea of where everything needed to go once the adhesive was in place. It may not be obvious from the picture, but for this notebook the paper is slightly longer than needed because I wanted to wrap it into the inside of the covers.
Once the dry fitting was done, I used a piece of sticky strip on the spine to attach a piece of chocolate chip ribbon to serve as a bookmark. I then added more sticky strip over the ribbon and along the entire length of the notebook spine, as well as in the corners of the front and back covers of the notebook. What is not show in the photos is that I covered the remaining edges of the front and back covers with 3M double sided tape to make sure none of the edges of the paper I was using to cover up the covers would stick up or get snagged on something.
With all the adhesives in place and the red tape peeled off the sticky strip, I attached the paper to the notebook. In this step you have to be very careful that everything is lined up exactly right - the sticky strip is very unforgiving and does not let you move the paper around once it's down.
I stamped five different images form the Six Sided Sampler set in Memento Tuxedo Black ink on very vanilla card stock and pinched them out with the hexagon punch. I lined the backs of two of those images with sticky strip and attached them back to back to each other over the chocolate chip ribbon to form the bookmark tab. I attached the other three punched hexagon pieces to the front of the notebook for a bit of non-fussy decoration and to give hubby a space to label the notebook if he wants. In the next photos I show the front and back of the notebook as well as the two sides of the bookmark.
I really like how this notebook cover turned out, and especially how realistic that leather cord binding looks. It adds so much to the project! I also love how the plaids in the hexagons continue the whole plaid theme. Since this project meets the criteria for last Wednesday's Simon Says Stamp Wednesday blog challenge (Simon Says: Use Plaid) by featuring both plaid patterned paper and stamps, I will happily submit it there.
Recipe:
Paper: very vanilla, Patchwork Plaid patterned paper from Colorbook
Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black
Stamps: Six Sided Sampler
Accessories: Hexagon Punch, Chocolate Chip Ribbon

scrap page centerpiece
Tonight I'm showing you a project that we'll be making at a March 25th class at the Hillside library. You might recall that I made a similar double sided upright centerpiece last year around Father's Day and then again at Christmas. The Winter version went over so well at the class I taught in Itasca that I thought I would do something similar for the Hillside class.
I look at these two sides of the centerpiece as Spring and Summer. Spring is labeled as such, though class attendants will be able to stamp their own alternate title if they wish. The Summer side is just labeled "Happy Days." It's decorated with bright flowers form the die cut blooms collection.
If you'd like to make this project contact the Hillside library. The library requires a deposit at time of registration, but the deposit is returned to you on the night of the class, so as long as you show up the class is free. Hope to see you there next month!

Roommate gifts
If everything goes according to plan, right about now I should be arriving at my hotel in Orlando ready to meet up with my roomies, so it's safe to show you the gifts I made for them and a couple of my other "across the miles" demo friends. As you can see, the gifts are chipboard coaster desktop calendars.
Because I was making these at the last minute (what else is new?) and because I've been so short on time lately, they're not very elaborate. But I still think they are pretty cute and a great reminder of our favorite business and hobby through out the year. In case you're wondering what the other months looked like, here they all are. Want to hear the funniest thing? I didn't even have time to make one for myself -- I'll have to do that when I get back home.

Valentine treat box
Here's another project we'll be making at the January stamp camp. I always include at least one 3-D project at my stamp camps and a treat box just seemed really appropriate for Valentine's Day, which to me is all about chocolate!
I used the scalloped circle image from the new Love You Much set for the tag, because in addition to being perfect for the occasion, it could also be used to hint at the contents of the box (if you choose to fill it with Hershey's Hugs & Kisses).
I was inspired to create this box by the treat box featured on page 16 of the Fall Winter Catalog. In fact, you'll note I basically CASEd the shell of the box, only changing the color from baja breeze to riding hood red. I even used a sentiment from the "Best Yet" level 1 hostess set, just like the sample. I really love the fact that Stampin' Up! gives us such a great inspiration book filed with projects that are easily duplicated at home. My stamping time has been so limited lately that I really appreciate not having to come up with projects from scratch!
Here's the recipe for the box:
Stamps: Love You Much, Best Yet
Paper: Very Vanilla, Close to Cocoa, riding hood red, pink pirouette, riding hood red patterns designer series paper
Ink: close to cocoa
Accessories: riding hood red striped ribbon, natural hemp twine, 1/8" handheld circle punch

Have a Heart
You might think December 2 is a little early to be thinking about Valentine's Day, but trust me, February 14 will be here before you know it so you might as well get ready now! Stampin' Up! and I are ready to help you with a couple of Valentine's Day theme specials. And I thought I'd include photos of some projects to help you get in the right frame of mind.
The first photo shows a couple of projects we made at our demo group Christmas Party. They were the projects that I couldn't show you earlier this month because of Stampin' Up! rules. But since the bundle special can now be ordered, I can post the photo of these cute three cards, all made using products from the Love You Much bundle special. Here's the scoop on the special. Starting December 23 through January 31, you can order the Love You Much bundle for just $41.48! And, if you purchase the bundle today along with other products that, together, total $70 or more, you can also take advantage of the last day of FREE SHIPPING, saving you even more!
Plus, I'm offering a Stamp with Diane ONE DAY ONLY SPECIAL. All orders of something Valentine's Day related (it doesn't have to be a stamp set -- be creative!), placed by 8:00 p.m. today, with or without the purchase of other merchandise, will have their tax paid by me. Just call or e-mail me your order or place it on-line through my web site and I will either not charge the tax (for e-mail and phone orders) or will mail out a rebate check equivalent to the tax amount (for orders placed on-line through my Stampin' Up! web site).Don't forget, you can combine the Love You much bundle special with many of our other specials, such as the 10% off all retiring stamp sets purchased today (It's the last day for that special as well, so be sure to order your favorites. Free shipping is like getting another 10% or more off the price of your purchased items) and the 20% off all stamp sets in the catalog sample with a $20 unrelated purchase.
Keep in mind that the products in the bundle can be used for all sorts of other occasions, like the small heart shamrock created just from small hearts punched with the new Heart to Heart punch.
So don't delay, CALL OR E-MAIL ME to place your order. Don't let this opportunity to double and triple dip into savings pass you by!

You've got mail!
I think tonight's project would make a great Christmas gift, especially for a teacher! And I'm happy to say that I'm not alone, as I completely sold out of these at today's craft fair.
The best part about this project? It's so simple!
I started out with a little mailbox I picked up at Target a couple of years ago. (Target also sold a slightly different version of these last year and may do so again this winter, so keep a look out if you'd like to duplicate this project for end-of-year gifts.) I covered the side using some of the Summer Picnic Designer Series Paper. To have the paper neatly cover the area around the flag I simply punched a 1/2" circle and made a notch with my scissors form the circle to the edge of the paper so I could attach the paper all around the flag.
To decorate the front I inked up the apple image using old olive, chocolate chip and real red stampin' write markers on whisper white card stock, then punched it out with my 1 1/4" circle punch. I added a 1 3/8" circle mat of old olive card stock and a scalloped circle mat of real red card stock. To decorate the flag I used a scalloped circle punched out of old olive card stock and added the Merry Christmas sentiment from the Punches Three Level 1 hostess set stamped in real red on whisper white and punched out with our scalloped square punch.
Inside the mailbox I placed 4 packets of Mott's Apple Cider mix -- each packet a different flavor. I absolutely love this cider mix and drank a ton of it last winter! If the weather so far this year is any indication, I better stock up for this winter as well -- it's proving, once again, to be the perfect warm apple cider season.
I should also mention that my mom and I had a great time at today's craft fair at Lake Park High School. It's always fun to be back at my Alma Mater to see how things are changing and how the students seem to be getting younger and younger every year. It couldn't possible be me getting older, right? ;-)

Photo pencil caddy
This is another craft fair project. Back in the spring I found these cool photo cube pencil caddies. They each have spaces for 4 photos and each came with 6 pencils and 6 note cards and envelopes. Originally I was going to cover them with Stampin' Up! designer paper, but after I packed them in a box i forgot about them until just this week. With no time to cover them in designer paper I was going to hold on to them for another year, until my mom pointed out that the design on the caddies is actually perfect for Christmas as is.
Of course mom is absolutely right, so this became a super easy alteration project. I just stamped some images to put in the photo holders (in this case I used very vanilla card stock, night of navy ink and the skating couple image from the Christmas Post set) and wrapped the caddy with more wired ribbon. Wow, that was easy! This is what the caddy looks like from the side.
I think these would make a very elegant gift for a teacher, co-worker or friend. The recipient can keep the stamped images in or replace them with photos.
And it just goes to show that we should always be on the lookout for ready-made items that would be really easy to customize with just a bit of stamping and turn into sort of a store-bought/hand made hybrid.
Tomorrow I'll show you another project we made specifically with teachers in mind.

Ornament Frames
Tonight more projects from the craft fair stash. I had fun making these photo frame ornaments.
A while ago I picked up these frames at a Dollar store. They were white metal with a nicely finished back and were just begging to be altered. I showed you one of these last month, and now I've made a bunch more (with my mom's help). I used retired designer paper, punched pieces and little felt flurries.
This is just a photo of the back of one of the ornaments.

Travel tin candles
Last year at the craft fair my best sellers were scented candles in tins that I covered with designer paper and decorated with poinsettia's made out of pieces punched with the 5 petal flower punch. My entire supply was purchased by a single customer so early in the show that I didn't even have time to take a picture. So obviously this year I wanted to feature this item again, and was very excited to find these travel tin candles at Michael's.
Trouble was, when I got them home and started experimenting with my designer paper, I realized that the tins were pretty enough in themselves not to need to be covered. Why is this a problem? Well, I can't exactly re-sell these without doing anything to them.
I tried wrapping them with some SU ribbon, but the look wasn't quite right. That's when it hit me! Although in most cases I try to use only SU products in my projects, this particular case called for a product SU does not carry -- wired ribbon. Fortunately, I happen to have enough wired ribbon in my basement to last a lifetime or more, so I ran down and retrieved several different patters. I then selected a ribbon pattern to coordinate with each candle tin and tied the ribbon into fancy bows. This alone made the tins super showy!
Of course I had to stamp something in connection with the tin, so I grabbed a retired hostess set and my large tag punch and made some tags that I attached to the bow with gold cord. Now I'm just crossing my fingers that the tins with big bows will yield the same sort of success that last year's candles did.
One of the more fun things about stamping for the craft fair is that I get to dig out my retired stamps, like the tag stamp I used for this project. I really only use the retired stamps to make items for craft fairs, so each December is kind of like re-visiting old friends. And, of course, with the new retirement list coming out tomorrow, these old friends will soon be joined by a whole new batch of retirees. Do you have any guesses as to what will be on the list? I do, but I'm not telling! We'll just have to all tune in on Tuesday to see.
And for all those who asked about the candy tins I used in my last post, I honestly can't tell you where those particular tins came from because I got them in a bulk buy I participated in with a bunch of other demos this past winter. I didn't order these and I'm not sure of the source. However, I do know that you can get the same (or at least very similar) tins from specialty bottle at this link: http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=47. The tins I used seem to be the 4 oz. size. Hope that helps!

Getting ready for the craft fair
I know you've seen one of these before -- now see the whole family. These are just some of the little chocolate-filled boxes I made for the Lake Park High School craft fair. Once again my mom has been helping me get ready, and I'm really grateful because with the craft fair taking place next Saturday, time is running out!
I will upload other craft fair projects tomorrow and throughout the week. Enjoy!

Decor Elements Candy Jar
Tomorrow is our annual neighborhood Holiday brunch. Each year the families from out block take turns hosting and everyone brings their favorite food to share. It's a lot of fun!
This year I decided to make a gift for the hosts (something a little different form the last-minute bottle of wine we typically bring). I found this cool candy jar at Wal-Mart and I just knew that I could do something fun with it. I started by adhering the small Jingle All The Way home decor element to the lid. It was just the perfect size! Then I wrapped a piece of 5/8" real red grosgrain around the edge of the lid and tied a bow around that using the red gingham ribbon. On the sides of the jar I wanted to continue the "jingle all the way" theme, so I stamped the image form the Sleigh Bells Ring set with the white stazon ink on each side of the jar. To make sure the image was visible, I used my coluzzle to cut out 2 circles from real red patterns paper (available only in the Level 1 Hostess paper sampler). I then attached the circles on the inside of the jar -- one on each side -- using mini glue dots.

Another CD Folder mini scrapbook
I know I said there wouldn't be anything new here for a few days, but I did have this CD Folder mini scrapbook that I used in the directions for this class-by-mail project. Obviously it's very raw and unfinished, and I'm really looking forward to adding photos and journaling to these pages and to decorating the front cover.

On Board Scrapbook Centerpiece
Tonight's project is a sample of the scrapbook centerpiece we'll be making at my December Itasca Community Library class. I love this project for so many reasons. First, it takes scrap booking out of the album and into home decor, allowing us to share this craft with everyone who enters the home. Second, it's decorated on both sides, so it's pretty from any angle. And third, because one side is seasonal, it can be kept out long after the other Holiday decorations are put away.
To make this project I started with one piece of the large on board book basics (they come 4 to a pack, so you can make one for yourself and give three away or make one for each season of the year). For the Christmas side, I covered it with riding hood red card stock and old olive patterns designer series paper, with a piece of the riding hood red striped ribbon from the holiday mini covering the seam. I used an image form the Big on Christmas set as my title, stamping it in basic black on naturals ivory card stock and coloring with a blender pen and stampin' write markers. I added a riding hood red mat to make the title stand out. I then punched different shapes out of riding hood red card stock, stamped them in encore gold with images form the Winter Post set, added pieces punched with the word window punch out of brushed gold card stock to look like ornament tops and used the elastic gold cord to make the "ornaments" look like they were hanging form the top of the page. The photo mat is a 5.25x7.25 piece of naturals ivory card stock, just perfect for a 5x7" photo. On the reverse side I used baja breeze card stock and pacific point patterns designer series paper. I stamped the baja breeze card stock with various size snowflakes form the Snow Swirled set in baja breeze ink. I then stamped the title (again, from the Big on Christmas set) in basic black on whisper white card stock and colored it using a blender pen. I added a pacific point mat and punched a horizontal slot in both layers, which enabled me to tie on a piece of baja breeze striped grosgrain ribbon. I added a 5.25x7.25" mat of pacific point card stock, wrapped with more of the pacific point striped grosgrain ribbon. As a final decoration I added two of the felt flurries.

photo holder ornament
Does this ever happen to you? You find something in a store that you think is neat and the price is right and you're certain you can turn it into something really fun and useful but when you get it home it just goes into a box or a back of a drawer and you never realize its true potential? I hope someone out there answered yes, because I sure would not want to be alone on this one.
Anyway, a couple of years ago I found these round white photo holders. They were kind of plain, but nicely finished in the back (with a velvet backing, no less, as shown in this photo) and I just knew I could alter them in some way with stamping that would punch them up a bit. But then I set them aside and, frankly, completely forgot about them until the other day, when I was cleaning out a closet and came across them again. Not wanting to forget again, I decided to decorate one right away. I was thrilled to find that one of the coluzzle circles was a perfect for to cover the front of the photo holder. Even though the space for the photo on the original holders was square, cutting out that square would be really difficult so I opted to go with another circle in the center cut out with the coluzzle. For this holder I used a piece of scrap decorative card stock from an old simply scrappin' kit (sorry, I can't remember the name). I colored the dots and some of the stripes with my gold painty to add some shimmer. I then added some small stars punched out of the brushed gold card stock and a sentiment from so many sayings stamped in real red on whisper white, punched out with the word window punch and layered on top of a large oval punched form the brushed gold card stock. I threaded some real red 1/4" grosgrain ribbon through the pre-drilled home at the top of the photo holder. I then adhered the decorated designer cards stock over the front of the photo holder. Finally I found a photo to insert on top of this week's TV listing book -- the chick form King of Queens. I would have put in a photo of someone I knew, but there wasn't time to get the size right.
So there you have it. A fun photo-holder ornament for the Christmas tree. I can't wait to make more.

Scrap & polish
I am so excited! Not only did Bill and I manage to take down and put away all of the Halloween decorations today, we also managed to squeeze in a trip to Target!
Post-Halloween shopping at Target is a family tradition -- it's mostly how we get new decorations and prizes for next year's pumpkin carving contest. But this year, before we hit the Halloween aisles, we ventured into the Dollar spot, and guess what I found? These adorable micro bottles of nail polish. Three .07 fl. oz bottles for just $1.00! They were so cute! I just knew I had to pick some up and think of something to do with them for Christmas.
It took a little trial and error on the measuring and scoring part (the snowman version was my first trial and is very much less than perfect) but I now have all the measurements and I can hardly contain myself because in addition to being totally adorable, this project used nothing but scraps! Woo Hoo! Want to know how to make these nail polish holders? Easy Peasy! Start with a 5.5 inch long strip of card stock in the color of your choice between 3/4 and 1 1/4 inch wide (for reference, the red strip in the photo is 1 inch wide and the pink is 1 1/4 inch wide.) Score the strip along the length at 3/8, 3/4, 2 3/8, 3 1/8, 4 3/4, and 5 1/8 inches. Use a pop-up glue dot to secure the nail polish bottle to the center of the strip. Fold the strip around the bottle along the score lines so that the top two tabs meet in the center.
Use a 1/8" hand held punch to punch two holes through the center of the top tabs and secure closed with ribbon that coordinates with the colors in your selected image. Stamp and color your image and punch out using the shape of your choice (I used the scalloped square, but most other shapes would work as well.) Stamp the same shape for the tag in the back, attach both punched pieces to the front and the back and you're done.
I think this would make a perfect stocking stuffer for a tween, teen, best girlfriend or female co-worker. It's a fun, hand-stamped present and the recipient need never know that you made it from your scraps! I know I'll be making a bunch of them this Christmas!

Thanksgiving Favor
Tonight's project is another class project for November's class at the Hillside Library. It's a Thanksgiving candy treat similar to the two Halloween treat holders I showed previously, which can also be used as a place card holder (thanks to Julie F. for that brilliant idea!).
(edited to add: I'm so sorry for not posting this earlier. Something clearly went wrong with the photo upload and I havent had a chance to fix this post until now. HOpe you like the treat holder!)
